Welcome
Maison Marcelle is part of a secluded family-owned hamlet in the hinterland of the Côte d’Azur. Set on the peninsula of a small mountain, the hamlet overlooks rolling hills and valleys, barely another house in sight. It is an environment of isolation, nature, wind, silence, peace, regeneration and searching. We welcome residents without a strict goal in mind, allowing each person to determine for themselves what they need in their creative process. Whether that means retreat and recovery, or intensive work and collaboration.
“The environment is impressive, isolated, and open. The days feel long and cohesive. You seldom get in the car to go anywhere. Meanwhile, you’re free to roam and your thoughts find ample space.“
History
The hamlet hosting Maison Marcelle was first mentioned in the 1747 in the Cassini maps, the first collection of topographical and geometrical maps of the French kingdom. Until the Second World War, a handful of families lived there, making a living from sheep farming and olive growing. In the 1970s, the hamlet was acquired by the Berlin art dealer Rudolf Springer, who pioneered the creative spirit of the place. His wife, Crista Dichgans, worked out of the large central studio, as well as the artists he represented over the years. In turn, Springer sold the property to the family who currently owns it in 2003: Joana, Stephan, Lilian and Victor Breidenbach. In 2022 the opportunity arose to purchase an additional house in the hamlet, which opened as Maison Marcelle in the spring of 2024. Our hope is that Maison Marcelle becomes a pocket of fresh air, allowing people space for relaxation, creativity, and being.
“Maison Marcelle is a place of stillness. A retreat from the normal functioning of modern life.”
